Before installing timber, engineered timber, laminate or hybrid flooring, the substrate must meet the flooring manufacturer's flatness requirements. A commonly specified tolerance is no more than 3 mm variation over a 3 m straightedge, but always check the exact product specification.
High and low spots can allow movement and flexing underfoot, putting extra stress on hybrid flooring click-lock connections. Over time, joints can separate or break.
Uneven subfloors can contribute to hollow spots, movement, squeaking and premature wear in timber and floating floor systems.
Proper surface preparation, moisture assessment and a compatible levelling system help create a reliable base for the final floor covering.
Flatness is different from levelness: many flooring products require a flat substrate, not necessarily one that is perfectly horizontal. Final tolerances and moisture limits depend on the flooring and system manufacturer.
We assess the subfloor and select a suitable preparation and levelling system for each job.
Check subfloor moisture against the selected floor covering and product requirements. Where moisture is excessive, assess whether a compatible moisture-control or moisture-seal system is required.
Mechanically prepare the substrate and remove surface contaminants or unsuitable residues as required.
Thoroughly vacuum dust and debris to leave the prepared surface clean.
Apply the compatible primer and allow it to dry or reach the specified application condition.
Install a suitable quality levelling compound from ranges such as Sika, Mapei, Cemix or SALDO, selected for the substrate and intended flooring.
Allow the levelling compound to cure and meet the required moisture, strength and flatness criteria before flooring installation.
